The major active ingredient in turmeric, curcumin, works by scavenging and neutralizing free oxygen radicals in the body. These free radicals are what is believed turmeric root and powderto cause most of the problems with inflammation. Turmeric has been used historically as a remedy for conditions caused by inflammation, including arthritis, osteoarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Some research studies have concluded that turmeric can be as effective as popular over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) such as Ibuprofen, Motrin and hydro-cortisone.

Unlike these OTC drugs, which unfortunately can have toxic side effects (ulcer formation & intestinal bleeding to name two), curcumin is not known to be toxic.

Turmeric is available in capsule form as a supplement, as well as a powder. Turmeric powder should be stored in a cool, dry place. Fresh turmeric rhizome should be kept in the refrigerator.
